Temakizushi (sushi hand rolls)
One of the most delightful culinary exposures I've had the great
pleasure to experience is temakizushi, or sushi hand rolls. My
family simply calls it sushi. We were introduced to it by some
very close friends of ours (the wife is Korean) one Sabbath
for lunch. It took several times being invited over for sushi
before we were adventurous enough to try it on our own. It does
take quite a bit of prep time and you have to have the right
ingredients, but it really is worth it. The more you eat it, the
more you like it and the more you want to eat it. Soon it became the
standard Thursday evening meal. Even my three daughters love it
and look forward to sushi night. We have introduced it to family
and friends, many who also now have it on a regular basis.
It is not the cheapest meal to prepare. Some of the ingredients
are "expensive" and hard to find. One particular ingredient
I have not found a local source for it and have to get it on my
business trips to Ohio (I live in Texas). But in the end it
is all very worth it.
Since being introduced to sushi hand rolls, we have somewhat made it
our own. It is not exactly like what you will find in a sushi
restaurant. I believe there is not exact way one has to make
sushi, just like there is more than one way to skin cats. Note:
We do NOT use cat meat in our sushi. In fact, our sushi is
vegan, in that there is no animal products or by-products in it at all.
